The disemboldied Eye of Providence, with rays surrounding it, was a general emblem of divine oversight before it became a standard Masonic symbol. It was used on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782. It was carved into chalcedony here, along with the motto "MAY IT WATCH OVER YOU", as a protective symbol. c. 1820.
