The heart shape has evolved over the centuries from an upside-down pear shape in the 1500s to the symmetrical cleft heart we use today. In the 19th century, this version - with a twist to one side - was commonly called a “witch’s heart.” Giving your loved one a jewel in this shape meant that they had “bewitched” you (in the most romantic way possible). This late Victorian witch’s heart brooch is set with seed pearls and affixed with a safety chain.
